Why Ketamine?

Two key neurotransmitters involved in this process are glutamate and GABA, the brain's most abundant chemical messengers. Glutamate acts as the primary excitatory neurotransmitter, stimulating neural activity, while GABA serves as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter, dampening neural activity. 

Ketamine primarily works by blocking NMDA receptors, which are present on both glutamate and GABA neurons. This blockade reduces the activity of GABA, lowering inhibition of neural firing and resulting in increased overall brain activity, especially in the prefrontal cortex. This brain region is essential for mood regulation and decision-making. 

Ketamine also influences AMPA receptors, initiating a chain of molecular events that enhance neuroplasticity—the brain's capacity to form and strengthen connections. Proteins such as Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), mTOR, eEF2, and GSK-3 play pivotal roles in this process, supporting the growth and reinforcement of neural pathways.
